Aus Information Centre
!Aus is Nama for 'snake fountain'. For indigenous people
and early explorers it was the first or last stop for
replenishing water before or after crossing the hostile
Namib. Today the area is of biological significance
- as a 'hotspot' with over 500 plant species and as
the intersection of three desert biomes (Dune Namib,
Nama Karoo and Succulent Karoo, the most bio-diverse
desert on earth). Numerous display boards at Aus Info
Centre depict the unique environment, the Wild Horses
of the Namib, the turbulent history and the local culture.
Light meals as well as tea and pastries are available
at the café & restaurant. The centre creates
jobs and generates income for the benefit of the community.
