Guests of Namib Desert Lodge who want to participate in an organized excursion to Sossusvlei have to rise early. Because the colours of the desert are at their most beautiful and resplendent in the first light of the morning. And the ascent to the top of the highest dunes on earth is not quite as taxing in the freshness of the new day. It will definitely rev up the circulation of any morning grouch and the reward is a magnificent view across the dune landscape and Sossusvlei, currently filled with water - which is a very rare sight.
Namib Desert Lodge acquired a second all-wheel drive with eight passenger seats this month. This means that the two vehicles can now take a total of 16 guests on a leisurely excursion to Sossusvlei every day. Professional guides provide details on the specific features of the landscape, the fauna and flora. These excursions can be booked in advance through the Sossusvlei Shuttle in Windhoek. Any remaining seats are directly available at the lodge.
It goes without saying that the physical well-being of guests participating in Sossusvlei excursions will not be neglected either: breakfast is served at the lodge before departure and generous packed lunches are provided. There are also hearty packed breakfasts for those who can’t stomach anything at the crack of dawn. You can be certain that you will relish your edible goodies during picnic time under the grand old camel thorn trees at Sossusvlei, no matter what time of day it is...
On your return trip to Namib Desert Lodge you will also stop at the Sesriem Canyon. Its name goes back to the times of ox wagons during the second half of the 19th century. Six long thongs (in Afrikaans: ses rieme) had to be tied together in order to scoop water from the bottom of the canyon.
Guests return to the lodge no later than 14h00. The half-day trips can be booked directly at Namib Desert Lodge. The price is N$ 1,000 for adults and N$ 500 for children between 6 and 13 years old; children younger than six are free.
