From Windhoek to Lima for the World Congress on Biosphere Reserves

Avatar of inke inke - 11. March 2016 - Gondwana Collection

Quintin Hartung will attend the 4th World Congress on UNESCO Biosphere Reserves from 14 to 17 March in Lima, Peru.

Gondwana boasts a new coordinator for matters regarding nature conservation. Quintin Hartung started on 1 March – and he is already packing his bags! For the unique opportunity, that is, to attend the 4th World Congress on UNESCO Biosphere Reserves from 14 to 17 March in Lima, Peru.

Windhoek-born Quintin Hartung is 27 years old and deeply committed to environmental protection. After completing his nature conservation studies at the Polytechnic of Namibia as the best of his class in 2010 he went to work with NamibRand Nature Reserve, the company that had granted him a bursary for his studies. In February this year, he participated in a workshop on UNESCO Biosphere Reserves held in Gaborone in Botswana and was invited to the World Congress in Lima. Namibia has not yet joined this UNESCO initiative but follows the development of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) with great interest.

The WNBR covers internationally protected areas, serving as demonstration and learning sites for the implementation of sustainable development and the preservation of habitats. They promote a balance between the interests of nature conservation and economic activity and for man to live harmoniously with nature. The UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves was started in 1976 and now consists of more than 500 areas all over the world.

Quintin Hartung is the only delegate from Namibia to attend the World Congress in Lima. His participation is sponsored by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation.

In his position as Gondwana’s environmental coordinator he will monitor the implementation of management conservation plans at the lodges as well as participation in the Eco Awards. Furthermore he will coordinate nature conservation in the three Gondwana nature reserves and cooperation with other Namibian conservation projects.
