Etosha Safari Camp: Finalist at the Responsible Tourism Awards

Avatar of inke inke - 19. May 2016 - Gondwana Collection

Prize-giving of the Accommodation Establishment category (ltr): Gernot de Klerk (Nedbank), Albe Botha (NMH), Stephan Brückner (Wolwedans), Ruggero Micheletti (Nkasa Lupala), Mannfred Goldbeck (Gondwana)

The Responsible Tourism Awards 2016 were presented at the Namibia Tourism Expo today (19 May). Etosha Safari Camp was one of three finalists in the Accommodation Establishment category, together with Wolwedans Boulders Camp and award winner Nkasa Lupala Tented Lodge. Sense of Africa received the tour operator award. The winners of the Responsible Tourism Awards were announced by the Expo organisers, Namibia Media Holdings.

Etosha Safari Camp is located 9km from the Anderson Gate at the Etosha National Park. The 50 bungalows are placed between mopane trees and give the feeling of being surrounded by nature. The restaurant and bar are decorated in the unique style of a shebeen and offers guests an authentically African experience. What makes this experience even more appealing, are the Etosha Boys who entertain guests with live music around the evening camp fire. The Etosha Boys received N$12,000.00 for the best musical performance at the Responsible Tourism Awards ceremony.

The winner for the Responsible Tourism Award is determined according to the criteria of the Eco Awards Namibia. With its first ever participation in the Eco Awards in 2014, Etosha Safari Camp was immediately presented with the highest seal of approval for environmentally conscious tourism. Crucial points were awarded for its waste-water treatment plant, which supplies water for the gardens and reduces the water consumption on the lodge by more than half. Further components that scored points, were waste management, training initiatives for personal and social commitment.

Etosha Safari Camp is one of ten other lodges in the Gondwana Collection that have been awarded by the Eco Awards for their sustainable management. The Gondwana Collections strives to combine the hospitality industry with nature conservation and social commitment in a sustainable manner. With its conception in 1995, the Gondwana Collection bought farms and converted them into nature reserves and reintroduced game species that had once been indigenous to the area. The nature conservation is financed with the proceeds from the eco-friendly hospitality business, which in turn creates jobs and career opportunities for the local population.
