Gondwana’s mules go into retirement

Horseshoe Camp with communal cooking and sanitary facilities as well as cabins, each equipped with two beds and canvas-covered matrasses.

As of 2017 Gondwana will be offering slack-packing tours in the northern parts of the Fish River Canyon. This will give participants the opportunity to enjoy the hiking trail without the added weight of luggage and equipment. The Canyon Klipspringer Trail will replace the Mule Trails, which will only run until mid-September 2016.

After ten years of faithful companionship to about 1,000 adventurous hikers, the mules have already found a new home near Windhoek.

The Canyon Klipspringer Trail offers physically fit hiking enthusiasts a unique and exciting hike in the Canyon. The Trail starts and ends at the Klipspringer Base Camp in Gondwana Canyon Park, 650km from Windhoek. It covers a total distance of ca 32km in three days with four sleepovers at the Klipspringer Base Camp as well as Battlesnake-, Koelkrans- and Horseshoe Camp. Each overnight camp offers cooking and bathroom facilities. Luggage and equipment are conveyed between the overnight camps in personally numbered trunks, so participants only need to pack water and snacks for the day’s hike. The trail only runs from 15 April to 15 September.

The Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world, runs through the transition zone of two desert systems, the Nama Karoo and the Succulent Karoo (the most diverse desert on earth). The landscape is characterised by meandering gorges that are up to 300m deep, twisting and turning through ancient layers of rock. The flora includes unique plants like the quiver tree, euphorbia and tamarisk; and game such as mountain zebra, klipspringer, kudu, springbok and ostrich abounds in the area. With a little luck, water birds, like the African fish eagle, can also be spotted.
