Wika! One Nation, One Celebration

Avatar of inke inke 28. March 2017 - Culture

Last year's royal couple Princess Natascha I and Prince Oli I will hand over the reigns to the new Wika couple at the Royal Ball on 31 March. (Source: Windhoek Carnival)

The Windhoek Carnival (Wika) is kicking off tonight on Friday with the Royal Ball followed by the street parade of floats on Saturday. The float procession starts the Mayor’s Office at 11h11 proceeding through Independence Avenue and Bahnhof Street to the railway station. Don’t miss the action and join the party after the street parade at the home of the Windhoek Carnival, Sport Klub Windhoek in Olympia.

The Windhoek Carnival continues for the whole week and includes the childrens and youth carnival, a ladies’ and men’s night, two orator’s nights (a German and a multilingual one), a fancy dress ball and the Kehraus afterparty. Our photographer Dirk Heinrich will attend all the Wika events. Join the fun and have a look at our regular image updates in our Wika album.

The Windhoek Carnival was first held in 1953 and is actually a case of ‘necessity is the mother of invention’. When the Sport Klub Windhoek was desperate for a way to raise funds for its activities almost half a century ago, the idea came up to arrange a carnival as a fundraising project. Over the decades the ‘project’ developed into a cross-cultural, large-scale event and led to the establishment of other carnival societies all over the country.
