The Canyon Klipspringer Trail kicks off

Avatar of inke inke - 12. April 2017 - Gondwana Collection

Hiking enthusiasts can explore the Fish River Canyon at their leisure along Gondwana’s Canyon Klipspringer Trail.

A first group of hikers will use the Easter holidays to tackle the new Canyon Klipspringer Trail. As of April this year Gondwana offers slack-packing tours in the northern parts of the Fish River Canyon, giving hikers the opportunity to enjoy the hiking trail without the added weight of luggage and equipment. The Canyon Klipspringer Trail replaces the Mule Trails.

This trail offers physically fit hiking enthusiasts a unique and exciting hike in the Canyon. It starts and ends at the Klipspringer Base Camp in Gondwana Canyon Park, 650km from Windhoek and covers a total distance of ca 32km in three days with four sleepovers at the Klipspringer Base Camp as well as Battlesnake-, Koelkrans- and Horseshoe Camp. Each overnight camp offers cooking and bathroom facilities. Luggage and equipment are conveyed between the overnight camps in personally numbered trunks, so participants only need to pack water and snacks for the day’s hike. The trail runs from 15 April to 15 September.

The Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world, runs through the transition zone of two desert systems, the Nama Karoo and the Succulent Karoo (the most diverse desert on earth). The landscape is characterised by meandering gorges that are up to 300m deep, twisting and turning through ancient layers of rock. The flora includes unique plants like the quiver tree, euphorbia and tamarisk; and game such as mountain zebra, klipspringer, kudu, springbok and ostrich abounds in the area. With a little luck, water birds, like the African fish eagle, can also be spotted.
