Café of the month: The Farmhouse, Outjo

Outjo is often referred to as the gateway to Etosha and it is customary to stop for a bite to eat en route to the national park. A favourite stop is The Farmhouse – for its delicious homemade cakes and pies, laid back atmosphere and outdoor courtyard.

Owner Anastasia (Ansta) Gabathuler hails from a farm in the Etosha surrounds. She began her cooking career at the bottom, cleaning and peeling vegetables in a lodge kitchen, and worked her way up to chef and manager. She continued to gain culinary skills when she fell in love with and married her Swiss partner, learning the fine points of Swiss cuisine from her mother-in-law and in a Swiss hotel kitchen. The couple returned to Namibia in 2010 and while living in Outjo frequented The Farmhouse, popping in regularly for breakfast and lunch – and enjoying their home-baked cakes. When Ansta heard that the coffee shop was closing, she decided to take it over. “It had something special,” she says. It was her dream come true.

Over the years she renovated, opened at night and started the beer garden, yet kept the old-fashioned character and personal touch. Roses from her garden decorate the tables and photos of clients adorn the restaurant walls.

Ansta offers diners a large selection from her a la carte menu, and continues to bake her own brötchen and make her own pies and cakes. Lemon meringue, carrot and black-forest are old favourites, with Bienenstick (a German honey and almond cake) and Bündner Nusstorte (a nut-and-caramel traditional cake from Switzerland) adding international flavour.

We do it our way, she says. “There must be a secret taste inside.”

She proudly claims that The Farmhouse serves the best coffee in town. The coffee beans are freshly ground when you place your order!

More than doing things locally and traditionally - and in her own special way - Ansta shares her knowledge with her staff and her Life philosophy to smile and give love. 

“You must feel that things are done with love.”
