Elephant expert offers guide training at Namushasha River Lodge

Avatar of inke inke - 21. November 2017 - Gondwana Collection, Environment

Guide training at Namushasha River Lodge conducted by elephant expert Tommy Hall.

Elephant expert Tommy Hall is currently sharing his vast experience with guides at our Namushasha River Lodge. In the morning he shares his theoretical knowledge with the attendees and in the afternoon practical training takes place in the Bwabwata National Park. On Friday, the guides will be evaluated on the week’s training and we trust that our guides and the other attendees will be richer in knowledge and experience after this.

Earlier this year in an unfortunate incident one of our Namushasha game viewers was attacked by an irritated elephant in the Bwabwata National Park although the guide behaved responsibly and respectfully. Fortunately no one was injured during the event. This however prompted us to firstly investigate the incident and secondly improve our guides’ knowledge on elephant behaviour. We then asked Mr. Tommy Hall to visit the Namushasha River Lodge to impart his vast experience with elephants on our guides. Tommy has over 40 years’ experience in conservation and over 10 years intensive experience in working closely with, and studying elephant behaviour in the North West.

We invited other lodges and the Mashi conservancy to send some of their representatives to the week-long training at Namushasha River Lodge. Some of the lodges jumped at the opportunity and guides from as far as Grootberg joined in the training. Gondwana also sponsored five community members from the Mashi Conservancy (the conservancy in which Namushasha is situated) to join the training.
