Cancer Association travels the countryside - Namibia Safari and Lodges - Gondwana Collection

COVID-19. Status quo in Namibia.

It is with regret that Gondwana Collection Namibia has learnt that the COVID-19 virus has reached Namibia. On 14 March 2020, President Hage Geingob confirmed the first two cases. On 17 March, the President declared a state of emergency.

On 24 March 2020, the additional measures in response to the COVID-19 outbreak have been announced. They include a lockdown of the Khomas and Eronogo regions from 27 March until 16 April 2020. For regulations and guidelines please click here

Gondwana is fully aware of the current situation and continues to monitor the spread of the virus and the resulting changes to our industry. In view of the state of emergency and the additional measures ordered by the government, employees at Gondwana House in Windhoek will be working from home. Due to international and regional travel restrictions Gondwana has reduced its operations at the lodges as far as possible. Most employees have been sent home, at full pay.

The Ministry of Health has made availability for a toll-free phone number within Namibia for queries with regards to COVID-19. The toll-free number is 800-100-100 or alternatively 911.

The Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) has launched this year’s National Cancer Outreach Programme (NCOP) in the south of the country. From 22 to 26 January cancer screening and education was on the agenda in Rehoboth, Mariental, Stampriet and Aranos. Among the venues were Kalahari Anib Lodge and the Kalahari Farmhouse with the Self-Sufficiency Centre.

Already since 2016 the lodge group Gondwana Collection provides board and lodging in support of the Cancer Association’s National Outreach Programme. “We are delighted to host the CAN team”, says Gondwana’s training coordinator, Silke Ahrens, who organises the cooperation with CAN. “It is a way to provide an opportunity to our staff and the local communities to come for a check-up and receive advice on a healthy lifestyle.”

According to CAN statistics an average of ten Namibians are diagnosed with cancer every day. “The Cancer Association of Namibia aims to make contact with as many of these patients and tries to assist and support them to the best of our abilities,” says Rolf Hansen, CEO of the Cancer Association. “The NCOP plays a crucial role in national awareness, education and screening to fight cancer in the country. The NCOP expands from year to year: 9200 Namibians were screened fully complimentary during the outreaches.”

The cancer screening that the National Outreach Programme provides free of charge is funded with generous donations from the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project, Spar Namibia and the Sanlam Namibia Golf Challenge.

The next stops of the National Outreach Programme are the Namib Desert Lodge and the neighbouring Sossusvlei/Sesriem area in February, Hakusembe River Lodge near Rundu in March and the lodges in Gondwana Canyon Park in April. A visit of more than a week to the eastern Zambezi Region is planned for May and will include Namushasha River Lodge, Zambezi Mubala Lodge and Chobe River Camp as well as the surrounding communal areas. In June it will be the turn of Damara Mopane Lodge near Khorixas.
