At the public announcement ceremony for the Apprenticeship Pilot Project on 5 July, the Gondwana team met representatives of its partner institutions (l.t.r.): Gondwana MD Gys Joubert, Sharon Kavita (Gondwana Training department), Caroline Böck (NATH Office Manager), Silke Ahrens (Gondwana Training department) and Tom Mutavdzic, Director of the Silver Spoon Hospitality Academy.

Ten employees of the Gondwana Collection Namibia participate in the Apprenticeship Pilot Programme that was launched recently by the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) in cooperation with the Namibian Employers Federation (NEF) and the Global Apprenticeships Network. They are part of altogether 300 apprentices from 22 companies that signed the funding agreements towards which the NTA dedicated more than N$40 million.

“Be grateful that you have this opportunity, take this opportunity with both hands and work at it”, NEF Secretary General Tim Parkhouse said to the young apprentices at the public announcement ceremony on 5 July 2018 in Windhoek. “Be prepared to put in hard work and sometimes extra hours without expecting extra pay, do not waste time and money, you have an opportunity that so many others would dearly love to have.”

The Chief Executive Officer of the Namibia Training Authority, Jerry Beukes introduced the Apprenticeship Pilot Programme as an initiative of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector. He referred to it as a potential mean to address youth unemployment, improve firm-level productivity, enhance national economic competitiveness and accelerate the shift to a knowledge-based society. He emphasised: “No TVET system can ever be considered healthy and relevant, if it does not include a robust and pertinent component under which young people can be taken in by employers, and trained and mentored under real work conditions towards attaining national qualifications.”

Gondwana’s partner institutions for the three year programme are Silver Spoon Hospitality Academy and the Namibian Academy for Tourism and Hospitality, NATH. Two of the Gondwana apprentices will be trained in culinary skills development; another eight will participate in a guiding level 3 course.
