In 2019 the Gondwana Academy expanded its outreach by touring Namibia with representatives from communal conservancies and communities in the vicinity of Gondwana lodges in the Okavango and Zambezi regions.

Under the trusted leadership and guidance of Orlando Haraseb from Orlando Safaris & Tours, nine young Namibians ventured out on a 12-day tour from the banks of the Zambezi River to Sossusvlei - a great way to educate and introduce each other to the tourism industry, the diversity of Namibian’s natural beauty and environmental sustainability.

Activities included lodge visits in the northeast of the country and boat cruises on the Zambezi and Okavango rivers. They made a short stop-over in Windhoek on their way to Kalahari Anib  Lodge 30 km northeast of Mariental where they enjoyed a sundowner drive among the red dunes of the Kalahari Desert. The team then proceeded to Sossusvlei that is part of the Namib Sand Sea, a World Heritage Site. They stayed at Namib Desert Lodge before continuing to Walvis Bay, where they went on a boat cruise and slept at The Delight Swakopmund. The next stop was Etosha Safari Camp from where they drove through the Etosha National Park back to Hakusembe River Lodge before they proceeded to the Zambezi Region.

The participants of this Gondwana Academy trip not only learned a lot about Namibia, the environment, nature conservation, cultures and tourism-related matters such as guest relations and organisational skills but also excelled in teamwork, co-operation, discipline and mutual respect.

“Most members of the group had never travelled through Namibia before,” Orlando Haraseb said. “You could see their excitement and joy.” And Gondwana’s Learning Coordinator Silke Ahrens added, “We trust that they had an educational experience and will share impressions in their respective communities.“

Gondwana Collection Namibia entered joint venture agreements with the conservancies, traditional authorities and/or communities in the vicinity of their lodges in the north-eastern part of the country, namely Namushasha River LodgeChobe River Camp and Zambezi Mubala Lodge & Camp. Hakusembe River Lodge has an agreement with the Hakusembe Chieftainship. The agreements ensure that a fair share of the financial benefits derived from the lodges is shared with the local entities. Furthermore, the agreements ensure that local employment and empowerment is nurtured.
