It is the third year in a row that a property of the Gondwana Collection has reached the final of the Responsible Tourism Awards (RTA). In 2018, the Namib Desert Lodge is competing for the prestigious award. The other two finalists in the Accommodation Establishment category are Grootberg Lodge and Damaraland Camp (Wilderness Safaris). In the Tour Operators category, which includes shuttles, car rentals and the like, the three finalists are Abenteuer Afrika Reisen, Wild Dog Safaris and Ultimate Safaris.

The winners will be announced on 30 May 2018 at the Namibia Tourism Expo. This year’s RTA criteria are based on the theme for the 2018 Tourism Expo: “Conservation – small things matter.”

Namibia Media Holdings is the organiser of the Responsible Tourism Awards for sustainability in the tourism sector and maintains a close cooperation with Eco Awards Namibia. One requirement for the participation in the RTA is an Eco Award assessment with a minimum rating four desert flowers. Similar to the grading with stars for accommodation establishments, up to five desert flowers are awarded under the eco seal of quality.

The Namib Desert Lodge has a green heart. In its third participation in the Eco Awards in 2017 this Gondwana lodge has set new standards with excellent results. The five desert flowers for Namib Desert Lodge represent the maximum score (100%) in terms of conservation and guiding, energy, water, staff and health, legal and NTB compliance as well as further excellent scores.

In the Responsible Tourism Awards, the Namib Desert Lodge follows in the footprints of two other lodges of the Gondwana family, Etosha Safari Lodge (2017) and Etosha Safari Camp (2016) which were also among the finalists of the Accommodation Establishment category.
