Café of the month: Kameldorn Garten, Otjiwarongo

Travellers are always in need of good grub – and more importantly, places to pull off from the main road, rest and enjoy the surroundings. This month, Kameldorn Garten in Otjiwarongo caught our attention.

A favourite stop when travelling north, Kameldorn Garten has moved to Bahnhof Street, yet keeps the same great style: good food, a shady courtyard, off-road parking and a casual and relaxed atmosphere.

Dieter Radeck took over the restaurant in October 2011, bringing with him his cooking expertise. An internationally-qualified chef, Dieter trained at the Schloß Hotel Monrepos in Germany before working as head chef in Windhoek’s Gathemann Restaurant under Urs Gamma. His dream of starting his own restaurant and coffee shop came to fruition when he returned to his home town.

Keeping it local, he buys from farmers in the area, adding a European quality to local products. Dieter tries to do everything fresh, making his own sauces from scratch and even baking his own brötchen. His homemade meat pies are usually sold out by teatime! Specials are offered every day, and vary according to the season. They can range from a wildebeest dish to omajowas after the rain and a mouth-watering marula sorbet to end the meal on a sweet note.
