A dream comes true – 5 Years of Hitradio Namibia

Exactly five years ago at 6 o’clock in the morning on 1 August 2012, after an exciting night and crashed computers, Hitradio Namibia took to the airwaves. At the microphone, resolved but with butterflies in his tummy, sat Wilfried Hähner. He seemed amazingly calm.

With co-owner Sybille Rothkegel and a handful of energetic employees he had realised his dream: his own German radio station in Namibia. This was a very bold action at a time when many media platforms – especially privately owned radio stations and print media – were struggling to survive.

Most of the original colleagues, Reinhold Rothkegel, Christian Trede and Alex Brauer, are still with the station. They ensure continuity and five years on, they have built a powerful team that produces enthusiastic radio, is dear to Namibia and shares its love for the country with its listeners.

Wilfried Hähner is still Frontman and Managing Director of Hitradio Namibia. As a teenager, he co-hosted a music channel on NBC’s German radio programme. A few years later his passion for radio led to him becoming editor and host at the national broadcaster. Prior to that he had completed an apprenticeship as a banker and tour guide. Wilfried’s communication skills, wide sphere of interests and compassion have helped develop his reputation as a colourful character.

His cheerful mood is the signature to the early morning show and he is always readily available to listen to chatter on the studio line.

Although one does not need to look good on the radio, Wilfried is probably the only radio host in Namibia who is always immaculately dressed behind his microphone.

Among the memorable events of his radio career was an exclusive interview with President Hifikepunye Pohamba, which Wilfried thoroughly enjoyed. Another intimidating experience was an interview with the Klitschko brothers. Taller than 1.90 metres himself, Wilfried had to look up at guests for the first time in his life: “I thought they were standing on a platform,” he said afterwards.

In this kind of work one inevitably becomes a public figure. Nevertheless, it surprised his friends when in 2008, Wilfried threw his journalist’s coat aside to reveal the Windhoek Carnival Princely attire, including Wika tights. Wilfried is not a party animal, but rather a family man. He takes a few holidays throughout the year, which he likes to spend at the Gondwana Lodges in the Zambezi region, which he loves because of the lush river landscapes and the rich wildlife.

His love for nature, country and people determines the programme for Hitradio. Programmes consist of plenty of news from Namibia and around the world, spiced up with music from the 80s to the present day, including Namibian artists. Thanks to the station’s internet livestream, Hitradio Namibia makes an important contribution to the marketing of our country and thus also to the local tourism industry.

Congratulations to you, dear Wilfried, and your great team at Hitradio Namibia on your 5th anniversary! We are celebrating with you by launching your new CD with some of the best Namibian artists and songs and with a surprise video!

Hitradio Namibia broadcasts in Windhoek and surroundings on 99.5fm, at the coast on 97.5fm, in Otjiwarongo on 90.0fm and in Tsumeb on 90.4fm. The broadcast can be heard worldwide via the Livestream and via satellite.
