On the road, a refreshing stop like Cactus & Coffee is a find to be treasured. Well-signposted, at the north-western edge of the small town, this informal tea garden is a splash of pastel colours fused with succulent green.

It’s the perfect place to break your trip en route to Brandberg or Twyfelfontein. Or, if travelling further afield - ‘All roads lead to Cactus & Coffee’. As owner Mike van der Meer says: “It’s In the middle of a wheel, about 120km from Henties Bay, Khorixas, Omaruru, Karibib and Usakos.” His wife Pam, a landscape designer by profession, has worked her magic with the tea garden.

Although Cactus & Coffee claims to make the best coffee in Namibia, it also offers an assortment of delicious homemade cakes -  cheesecake, chocolate cake, carrot cake and apple pie - and bakes its own bread. “Everything’s homemade here,” says Mike. Cactus & Coffee has received Trip Advisor’s ‘Certificate of Excellence’ for the last three years running and received a rating of 9.5 out of ten from Booking.com guest reviews in 2017.

Open every day of the week from 7.30 to 5.00, its menu includes breakfast and light meals like toasteds, pancakes, chicken schnitzel, boerewors rolls and salads. Free wi-fi is a bonus, while you take a break from the dusty road.

Larger groups can enjoy beef fillet and roosterbrood (to be booked in advance) in the lapa of their adjacent campsite, aptly named ‘Daureb-Isib’ – View of the Brandberg.

Follow the signs as you enter Uis for friendliness, good food, cactuses and coffee.

As is written on one of their posters – courtesy of Dr Seuss:

‘You’re off to great places. Today is your day. Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.’
