Carrying a limited edition beer mug of this year's Windhoeker Oktoberfest, reigning Bavarian Beer Queen Veronika “Vroni” Ettstaller encountered a leopard at a Safari Guest Farm outside Windhoek on Monday this week (October 28, 2019). The latest Oktoberfest collectible features a leopard and a camel thorn tree silhouetted against a golden setting sun setting in hues of gold – the reason why Namibia Breweries arranged this exciting experience for their guest of honour. Before that, the 10th Bavarian Beer Queen visited the brewery in Windhoek and was surprised “how modern and big the Namibian brewery is”.

“I will definitely come back. What I experienced in these four days was amazing. I never expected this, I imagined something completely different”, Veronika said. She hopes to return to Namibia for the 100th anniversary of the Namibia Breweries next year, which still coincides with her tenure.

„Windhoek and the surroundings are so clean, and the multitude and variety of wildlife on the city’s doorstep is incredible”, said the Beer Queen who came for the two-day Oktoberfest in Namibia's capital and also visited two lodges in addition to the safari guest farm. “I've seen rhinos, giraffes and antelopes, but the most exciting was the leopard just a few metres away from the open off-road vehicle. I have never experienced anything like that in my life.” When two of the spotted cats lined up at the vehicle during cheetah feeding time, Vroni Ettstaller’s heart almost missed a beat but the experience had to be captured on smartphone. Bavaria’s beer queen left Namibia on Tuesday morning.

When the big cats were lined up at the vehicle during cheetah feeding time, the Bavarian Beer Queen felt somewhat uneasy.

Whereas the local beer queen is chosen for the number of full steins that she can carry all at the same time, the Bavarian Beer Queen has to prevail over her competitors with expert knowledge. She is seen as a representative of the Bavarian Brewery Association and therefore must be born in Bavaria and know Bavarian traditions, culture and society. Vroni Ettstaller is a 21-year-old student who came out on top against 57 competitors. The outcome of the election is determined “in equal parts by online voting, the votes of the jury and the votes of the guests who are present at the event on election night”. Veronika says she took part in the contest because she likes beer and because she likes to party and get to know people. Since her election in May last year she has been to Brussels and to Mexico and she will be travelling to Shanghai soon. She is taken with the hospitality in Namibia, she says, adding that it will not be her last visit.
