Feeling high while exploring the depths of the canyon

25. June 2018, inke - Gondwana Collection, Discover Namibia

“If you are looking for a smooth adventure - this is perfect. Not as tough as the big ‘real’ hike, and still a lovely experience.” What a positive feedback of a hiker, who recently participated in Gondwana’s Canyon Klipspringer Trail. Just imagine exploring the Fish River Canyon from as close as it gets, hiking in almost pristine nature with just a light backpack, dreaming at the campfire… Since April this year 140 hikers tackled the Canyon Klipspringer Trail in the northern parts of the second largest canyon in the world.

Their main focus is to help pets from low or no income households in areas where no veterinary services are available. At the beginning of June, Dr Ian Baines and his team visited the Eastern Zambezi Region. Gondwana supported their cause and invited them to stay at their lodges.

The journey of young vulture J121 so far

18. June 2018, inke - Environment

A White-backed Vulture was fitted with the yellow plastic tags J121 on the wings on 16 October 2016 as a nestling together with 13 conspecifics at farm Aris south of Windhoek. In 2017, J121 was spotted at Okonjima Lodge, 221 km north of where he had hatched. Roughly one month later he appeared at the vulture restaurant maintained by NARREC in Brakwater near Windhoek. This just goes to show that vultures travel considerable distances in search of food. Vultures in Namibia, in southern Africa and on the African continent as a whole are threatened by extinction.

On the road: along the Canyon-Diamond Route

15. June 2018, inke - Tourism, Gondwana Collection

Sparkling stones, wild horses, sweeping desert vistas and old diamond-mining towns epitomise this section of Namibia... There’s mystery and intrigue to be had in Namibia’s south-western corner where diamonds were once so numerous that they were said to sparkle by the light of the moon. And, where champagne was cheaper than water. But, that doesn’t mean that you have to rush to get there. No siree. The canyon first needs its due respect.

It is not only photographers who go into raptures: Gondwana Kalahari Park is characterised by a uniquely picturesque landscape of elongated dunes and valleys of red sand, yellow grass and green acacias. This private nature reserve (98 km²), owned by the Gondwana Collection, is home to animals which are typical for the Kalahari. A scientifically sound game management programme is monitored by qualified park management staff. An annual game count provides valuable data to the park management in terms of game numbers and diversity. The 2018 game count in Gondwana Kalahari Park took place on 2 and 3 June.
