Air-conditioned rooms at Namushasha River Lodge

15. February 2016, inke - Gondwana Collection

Click. The main switch is pushed up. At last, on 27 January, Namushasha River Lodge is connected to the national power grid. Everybody is tremendously pleased. “There was no time to celebrate, though”, says Reini Hoppe, the technical manager of the Gondwana Group. “We had to test the air conditioners in each of the 27 rooms.” Since that memorable day our guests sleep in pleasantly chilled rooms, and they can switch on the light in the middle of the night.

The Gondwana Collection is green at heart. This has been noticed by the Council for Sustainable Development (Rat für Nachhaltige Entwicklung) in Germany. The organisation recently awarded its Werkstatt N seal of quality to Gondwana. Since 2011 the Council annually honours 100 ideas and projects which bring alive a sustainable way of thought and conduct in everyday life. Initiatives in foreign countries were included for the first time this year. Gondwana received the award for its sustainable tourism products which focus on nature conservation and social commitment.

Where goodness grows

02. November 2015, inke - Gondwana Collection

Guests of our accommodation centres always marvel at the opulent and appetising buffets with their large selection of fresh salads, dairy and meat products. Our secret has a name: Gondwana Self-Sufficiency Centre (SSC). It is a farming operation which keeps chickens, pigs and cattle and also runs hothouses, a butchery and a smokehouse. The SSC is situated at the Kalahari Farmhouse on the outskirts of the village of Stampriet, east of Mariental in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. Now in summer the SSC is a Garden of Eden.
