Feel closer – Facelift for Kalahari Anib Lodge

With the completion of all renovations, Kalahari Anib Lodge has reopened to the public on 1 April 2016. The remodel was successfully completed within the three-month time frame. With the rebranding slogan implemented in 2014, the 'feel closer' theme has been applied to the design of the lodge. The Gondwana Collection wanted to enhance the experiences offered to guests and maintain and improve on the quality of their product. This was successfully achieved with the use of warm colours unique to the Kalahari Desert.

Fit & healthy – Joint venture with the Cancer Association

Gondwana promotes healthy lifestyles among its staff and as part of that supports the work of the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN)A professional CAN team will tour the country this year and visit our lodges to provide health education and valuable advice on healthy lifestyles. It will also offer cancer screening including pap smear, breast examination and prostate cancer examinations at the lodges as well as nearby villages and settlements. The CAN team will be assisted by local volunteers.

The Gondwana Collection has acquired five glass crushing machines in order to address the environmental threat that discarded glass bottles are posing to the country. Gondwana is the leading brand in Namibian eco-tourism and widely respected for its environmental entrepreneurship and green technologies employed at its establishments all over the country. With the introduction of six brand-new glass crushers, Gondwana is doing its part in cleaning up the environment and clearing it of glass litter as well as managing waste glass that originates from the Gondwana Lodges.

EES and Simon Desue on #RoadTripNamibia

Some YouTube channels will run hot later this month when well-known German comedian and web video producer Simon Desue is visiting Namibia at the invitation of EES (Eric Sell). Accompanied by a camera team they will travel around Namibia from 20 to 28 March and afford people all over the world an opportunity to see Namibia’s grand landscapes, its flora, fauna, its cultures and peoples through the artist duo’s eyes.

Gondwana boasts a new coordinator for matters regarding nature conservation. Quintin Hartung started on 1 March – and he is already packing his bags! For the unique opportunity, that is, to attend the 4th World Congress on UNESCO Biosphere Reserves from 14 to 17 March in Lima, Peru. Windhoek-born Quintin Hartung is 27 years old and deeply committed to environmental protection.

They joined in many shapes and places: Spiderman on a mission to make it rain in Windhoek, young women on the chilly North Sea coast in the Netherlands, farmers of the Maltahöhe Resettlement Community in front of their farmstead, or half of Swakopmund at the Mole beach... 31 rain dances were recorded for the #RainDanceNamibia Competition arranged by the Gondwana Collection, Bank Windhoek and EES. The dances can be viewed here. It has already registered more than 275,000 views. A phenomenal success!

Fire and Ice team up for the Cape Epic

Two passionate mountain bikers from opposite sides of the globe, separated by 10 000km, team up for the legendary Absa Cape Epic. Piet Swiegers, the 48-year-old Namibian Veteran cross-country mountain-bike champion from Aus, in Namibia’s arid south-western corner, will join 55-year-old Swedish Masters mountain-bike champion, Atle Hansen, from Hölö, Sweden, to cycle the Cape Epic on the 13-20 March 2016. And, if past achievement is anything to go by, the team will provide stiff competition to other riders in their category.

Click. The main switch is pushed up. At last, on 27 January, Namushasha River Lodge is connected to the national power grid. Everybody is tremendously pleased. “There was no time to celebrate, though”, says Reini Hoppe, the technical manager of the Gondwana Group. “We had to test the air conditioners in each of the 27 rooms.” Since that memorable day our guests sleep in pleasantly chilled rooms, and they can switch on the light in the middle of the night.

Sustainability builds bridges

The Gondwana Collection is green at heart. This has been noticed by the Council for Sustainable Development (Rat für Nachhaltige Entwicklung) in Germany. The organisation recently awarded its Werkstatt N seal of quality to Gondwana. Since 2011 the Council annually honours 100 ideas and projects which bring alive a sustainable way of thought and conduct in everyday life. Initiatives in foreign countries were included for the first time this year. Gondwana received the award for its sustainable tourism products which focus on nature conservation and social commitment.

The Delight Swakopmund charms its first guests

The new hotel of the Gondwana group, The Delight Swakopmund received its first guests on 1 November. The very first ones arriving were Mr Freddy Frewer and his wife Carola from Windhoek. They are staying at The Delight for a week and are more than satisfied: "The ambience is fantastic, the breakfast 100 percent and the staff is very attentive," says Freddy Frewer. "We are enjoying our stay to the fullest." "And the colours", his wife adds. "They are so beautiful and bright."
