Generally unknown: Namibia is an angler’s paradise

02. August 2018, inke - Environment, Sport

One doesn’t expect to find much fish in Namibia – after all it’s the driest country south of the Sahara.  And yet a large number of Namibians make a living from catching fish. Besides the fact that commercial fishing is the second largest sector of the economy there are also countless opportunities for leisure and sport angling.

Namibia boasts 14 surf angling clubs

16. July 2018, inke - Sport

Surf fishing means catching fish from the shoreline or wading in the surf. Namibia has 14 surf fishing clubs, and the various species of fish are caught on a catch-and-release basis. The clubs are affiliated to the Namibian Surf Angling Association (NSAA) which arranges five annual contests on the coast of Namibia. Contests are held within those sections on a ten-kilometre stretch of beach for a day.

Six freshwater angling associations in Namibia

13. July 2018, inke - Environment, Sport

Sporting the oldest desert on earth, Namibia is known as a desert country. Perennial rivers are few, but where there is water there is fish, and where there is fish there is angling. The riverine landscapes of the northeast are a freshwater angler’s dream. A large variety of fish is found in the Okavango, Kwando, Linyanti, Chobe and Zambezi rivers. Six angling associations are affiliated to the Namibia Federation for Freshwater Anglers (NFFA).

22. December 2017, inke - Discover Namibia, Sport

Many anglers aren’t aware that Namibia is really cool for fishing. The diversity of fish species is quite impressive. Perhaps you have heard about surf fishing for sharks, which is a common activity along the country’s beaches and Namibia is well-known for it. But there is so much more to fishing in this awesome country on the south-western coast of Africa. In May I was there on a journey of discovery and scrutinised fishing opportunities in various places.

Darkness stretches its daunting fingers into every direction, making you wonder what is hiding in the shadows… Intimidating, isn’t it? The Desert Dash, while exhilarating, challenging and absolutely thrilling, is most definitely not for the feint hearted.
