Mining and gemstones in Namibia

10. May 2019, inke - Economics, Tourism

Namibia is not only regarded as a touristic gem waiting to be discovered by travellers from all over the world, the country has many hidden gems in the literal sense of the word. Tourists love to take home a lasting memory from their trip to Namibia. Many semi precious stones found in Namibia are beautifully transformed by local goldsmiths into jewellery. The gemstone and jewellery trade is a smaller, but important part of Namibia’s economically significant mining sector.

Omagongo Festival – An intangible cultural heritage of humanity

08. May 2019, inke - Culture

The Aawambo have lived in harmony with their environment since time immemorial. The Omugongo or Marula tree, however, is of special significance to them as it provides a variety of products. The arrival of the Marula season was traditionally celebrated separately by the eight Aawambo communities, but has been rotated annually since 2001 when the first combined festival was held. Most importantly, it was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015.
